LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY

Laparoscopy is an operation performed in the abdomen or pelvis using small incisions with the aid of a camera. The laparoscope aids in diagnosis or therapeutic interventions with a few small cuts in the abdomen. Laparoscopic surgery can be classified as major or minor surgery depending on the nature of the procedure performed. Most laparoscopic procedures are major surgery, but gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy) and getting one's tubes tied (tubal ligation) are minor surgeries.

There are two types of laparoscope:
  • A telescopic rod lens system, usually connected to a video camera (single-chip CCD or three-chip CCD)
  • A digital laparoscope where a miniature digital video camera is placed at the end of the laparoscope, eliminating the rod lens system.
